ZTE, makers of the Grand X, have suggested that they will be unveiling the first phone powered by Mozilla’s Firefox OS at Mobile World Congress, which will be held in Barcelona towards the end of the month.Mozilla-ZTE-to-Launch-Firefox-OS-Smartphone-in-Early-2013-REPORT

ZTE’s Firefox plans were revealed via Twitter hashtags #ZTEGrandMemo and #ZTEMozilla. The hashtag #ZTEGrandMemo is all about ZTE’s phablet, while #ZTEMozilla refers to a smartphone powered by the Firefox OS. The two are expected to make an appearance at Mobile World Congress later this month.

Mozilla is the company behind the Firefox web browser. It has also worked on a mobile operating system based on HTML 5. This is the same language used on the web, which means apps for the platform can be used by both smartphones and PCs. It will be an open source project, just like Android.

Although ZTE is expected to launch a Firefox OS-powered smartphone, it is not the first to make hardware running the software. GeeksPhone was the first with the Keon and Peak. However, these are test phones made for app developers.

It’s hard to say if phones powered by the Firefox mobile OS will make an impact on the smartphone market, especially with Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS dominating the market. We’ll just have to wait and see how things turn out for Firefox.
